About Young
This rich diverse region was first settled by Europeans 187 years ago. In 1826 James White settled at Burrangong Station now known as Young. Burrangong is the area where Brocky’s Pit Stop Museum is located. The area was reserved for lambing ewes and therefore was in turn given the name of “Lambing Flat”. In 1860 White’s nephew found gold in the area prompting approximately 20,000 miners to come and try their luck.
Young is also known as the “Cherry Capital” of Australia with a wonderful cherry season running from late November to early January.
The Lambing Flat Chinese Festival in March and the Cherry Festival in December pay tribute to Young’s rich history.
Young is a perfect spot around which to explore the area’s gold trails, the beautiful hilltops region and enjoy the glorious countryside award winning foods, wines, orchards, gardens and festivals.
